A Food Adventure
Dinner in my house is always an adventure. My son is a budding chef and insists on helping with each part of meal preparation … every night. Sometimes, like last night, I think to myself “why can’t he just want to play video games instead?” But alas, being a good parent doesn’t involve a remote control and two little guys with black hair trying to squish mushrooms and save the princess. So I indulge him and let him help whenever I can.
I’ve started second guessing my decision to let him help. Involving Sebastian with the cooking process always ends up being an answer and question session. “Why did you put that there?” …. “What is that spice .. what does it taste like?”
Let me preface this by saying that I’m 99.999% vegetarian. Meaning I hardly ever eat meat, but I eat it now and then so I can’t be classified as a true vegetarian.
His questions have started to border on disgusting for me and last night was no different. In fact, last night was worse. He helped me make Shake ‘n Bake chicken.
We shook the chicken in the bag, put it in the oven and proceeded to start on the baked beans. As he was stirring, the conversation went something like this:
Sebastian: I like chicken, but that’s just part of it that we’re cooking. Where are the other parts? (I could see it wasn’t going to end well from here)
Me: Can we talk about this later?
Sebastian: Yeah. I like to eat pig too. Oink.
Me: Did you just oink?
Sebastian: (laughing): Yep. But pigs roll around in the mud and have curly tails. Chickens have feathers and peck at the dirt.
Me: Come on. Let’s talk about this later please
Sebastian: Why? I’m just talking about animals and how I like to eat them.
Ok, my appetite was officially lost. It’s unfortunate because I was looking forward to the Shake ‘n Bake chicken.
Lesson learned: Either go 100% raw vegan or stop letting him cook.
